Keeping your room clean may seem like a chore, and if you treat it that way that feeling won't change. Instead approach room cleaning like a game and have some fun with it. As you break your old habits, you'll find that keeping your room clean gets easier and easier, and you'll be doing it without thinking before you know it.

Steps

  1. Get into the habit of making your bed before you leave for the day. A messy bed can make a clean room look messy. This small step can inspire you to keep your room neat throughout the day. Throwing things on your bed is not making it.
    • After making your bed, put things out of place on it. It will motivate you to clean it to get in bed.
  2. Get an mp3 player, or a radio and play music while you clean (as long as it won't bother others). It can help distract you from the task at hand, and it can make it more fun!
  3. Keep a Room Clean. As tempting as it is to bring snacks in your room, all of those dirty dishes and wrappers can mess up a room fast. If you absolutely must eat food in your room, bring dishes back to the kitchen and throw all trash in the garbage when you are done. You may also find it helpful to have your own trash can. Make sure that there are no leftover crumbs! Crumbs can and will attract bugs like ants and cockroaches, and bugs in a room is no joke!
  4. Put things back where they belong. This may seem like it`s not a simple rule but if you follow it, you will never have to worry about your room being a disaster ever again. If you don't have time, at least make a deal with yourself that you will make sure everything is picked up before you go to bed. If you want to pick it up sooner, pick things up after you use it. Or maybe, once a week you could spend about an hour or so to make sure that your room is nice and clean and organized for the next week. If this gets tiring, you will not want to have to re-clean your room, and then you won't make a mess in the first place!
  5. Maintain. Once a week, do a simple maintenance cleaning. Dust off your desk, bookshelves, and other dusty surfaces. Vacuum and sweep your floor. Wash your sheets. Maybe clean off windows.
    • Find a place for everything, If you have a bin or box for all your things then when you need to clean up all you have to do is put things it there place all though finding everything a place may be difficult at first it will save you a lot of time cleaning in the future.
  6. Break the habits that lead to filth.
    • This one is obvious: Putting clothes on the floor instead of in the dirty clothes Clean a Hamper. Buy a basket and every time you use clothes put them in the basket. Then, every few days bring it to a washer.
    • Tossing a book on the floor after reading it instead of on the shelf. That's not getting you anywhere.
    • Kicking off shoes onto the floor instead of putting them away. Put shoes in one certain spot.
    • Crumpling up a piece of paper and throwing it on the floor instead of recycling it.
    • Put your garbage in a garbage can, everyone. I can't stress that enough. Don't just throw it out the window.
    • Drinking something in the room and leaving the cup on the desk.
    • Throwing unwanted pillows on the floor instead of putting them in the closet.
  7. Do a daily sweep. Before you go to bed, take aside a few minutes to pick up any dirty clothing or wrappers you forgot to put away and make sure your room at least looks decent before you settle into bed.

Tips

  • If cleaning your room is hard for you to do, you "don't have time" or you just are too lazy to, get a friend to come over and help you with it. Then you can have fun while doing the job!
  • Remember, lighting can make a room look even cleaner. Buy a few lamps, but don't overdo it. One floor lamp and two desk lamps are plenty, and make sure your bulb gives off a soft light.
  • Every time you get clothes to put away and you have a messy bedroom, put your clothes away first.
  • When you're in a rush changing your clothes, be sure to put them away, right away. When you don't, things pile up and it will be hard to clean!
  • To challenge yourself, once a week pick an object(s) such as a desk, drawer, nightstand, etc. And challenge yourself to keep it clean for the whole week.
  • If you find that keeping your room clean is still an impossible task with these tips, perhaps your system of organization needs some improvement. Sometimes rethinking the way you organize and store things can do wonders.
  • Be aware of certain situations that might undermine even your best efforts. If you go away on a trip or had a long day, you might feel tired and just want to throw your things on the floor. This is one of the worst things you can do. It's important to unpack immediately. You'll be thankful for it later.
  • Make a playlist on your iPod titled cleaning my room and pick your favorite songs that make you want to dance and sing this will make the time go by faster.
  • Get bins or something like that and label it with toys, books, games etc.
  • Also, the less stuff you have in your room the easier it is to keep clean.
  • Make sure you don't leave trash in your room such as on the floor, the bed, the desk etc. If you do find trash in your room, keep a trash can in your room to make quick clean up. If you have any papers or important notes from school, try to keep a stack of them and do not keep them all over your desk. Also, try to not throw dirty (or crusty) tissues on the floor or back in the box because that's just gross.
  • Always give your room a tidy before you go school so you get in a habit of doing so.
  • Avoid letting people in to your room, especially if they've never been in your room before. They'll look at things, pick it up, and don't put it back in the right place. Refrain from going to your room, or ask them to put your things back where they were.
  • Keep a picture of your former messy room somewhere nearby. If you are tempted to leave things out of place or to be messy, take a look at the picture to remind you of what will happen if you don't put in an effort.
  • Make sure you clean your room everyday and make sure you have some sort of bin in your room.
  • Download an audiobook onto a portable device and tuck it in your pocket while you clean. If you need to read as homework ask him/her if that would count, so that you can multitask.
  • If you share your room, try talking to your roommate if it seems that most of the time it's your roommate's mess.
  • Try to keep your laundry basket empty. Wash your dirty clothes every 2-3 weeks so u have room in your laundry just keep repeating that step and soon it will become a habit.
  • Sometimes if you're bored pretend you're a person in a dungeon and if you don’t clean up at a certain time the evil dungeon keeper (your Mom) will come and find out you didn't do it. And if you finish on time you are rewarded of leaving the dungeon! It can be fun for younger people. Remember you can also have fun like, pretending your hamper is a basketball hoop and your clothes can be the balls. But remember if you miss make sure to pick up the clothes.
  • Try switching up your room a bit. Move your furniture into new places, hang new posters on your walls, make your room brand new. This could motivate you to keep your "brand new" room clean!
  • Make sure when taking your clothes off put them in the dirty clothes or hamper.
  • You should have a place for everything. If it doesn't have a place, ask yourself if you really need it. Try going through all the things in your room every few month, and throwing away all your unneeded or unwanted items. This can make more room for new things, and the fewer things you have, the less things there are to make your room messy and not organized.
  • Make sure that if you DO let other people in your room that you make sure they pick up their mess.
  • When you wake up in the morning, take a few minutes to straighten things up in your room to save time later.
  • Whenever you take something out to play with, put it away after you are done. Don't leave a big mess behind. That makes your room worse and messy if you don't put things behind.
  • If you can't start all these habits at once or feel overwhelmed with it all, make a list of all the habits you need. Then try learning 1 habit over 2 weeks if it's not habit by then add a week. Repeat until everything is checked off your list.
  • Be sure the dresser you put your clothes in is a standing one because if you have a dresser under your bed your half tempted to put them in the side slots and not the drawer.
  • If you are sharing a room with a roommate that is messy, give them sections that they can be messy in.
  • Make your bed and then put everything out of place on your bed. It will convince you to clean everything off so you can climb into your bed after a long day.
  • If you're not sure whether or not to keep something or get rid of it, do the 5 second purge. Hold the object in your hand, and you have 5 seconds to come up with a valid reason to keep it. If you can't think of any excuse to hold on to the item, get rid of it. Either throw it away or sell/donate it. If you are sentimental or feel 5 seconds isn't enough time, you can up the count to 7-10 seconds.
  • Don't Wait Last Minute! Then you will have more to do, and it will take way longer!

Warnings

  • Just remember, procrastination is your greatest enemy in the fight to keep your room clean. Saying "I'll pick it up later" is a clear invitation for clutter and chaos.
  • Make sure to put things in groups(makeup,school,nails,toys,etc.).Next thing you know your room is good as new!
  • Any food left in your room will lead to bugs eventually. If you don't want to have "friends", then eat in the kitchen and dining room only. Bugs can carry illness.
  • Dirty underwear laying on the floor undermines not only you as a person but the entire household as a whole!
  • If the television is on switch it off as you may get distracted because of it.
  • Don't forget to clean the window grills thoroughly as each and everything matters!
