If you have young children at home, most likely you have crumbs lurking in corners, that draw pests into your home. This method of pest control does not use pesticides or sprays. Creating bug balls will lure pests to the bait, they will carry it back to their nest and it will destroy the colony.

Steps

  1. Take an old clean margarine container or cool whip container cut a quarter size hole in the bowl right at the rim. Do not cut the lid but retain the lid for later use.
    • If the container is going to be inside you can cut up to four holes.
    • If the container is going to be placed outside your home only cut one hole to protect the bait from the elements.
  2. Using a bucket or washable glass bowl, mix one cup common household borax, 1/2 cup bacon grease, and 1/2 cup sugar. Add honey or more grease to make the mixture moist enough to form into balls.
  3. Form into large balls place on the container lid.
  4. Snap the bowl upside-down onto the lid.
  5. Set into place inside cupboards, behind appliances and even outside in the garden to safely rid the area of ants and cockroaches before they enter your home without harming the environment or spraying pesticides.

Tips

  • If you have a horrid infestation, Sprinkle Diatomaceous earth around the foundation of your home. Diatomaceous earth is a natural occurring substance created from ground shells. It will cut the bodies of any insect (including beneficial insects) so use it sparingly or only if there is a severe infestation. Do not breath diatomaceous earth if you have a lung condition. Diatomaceous earth is deadly to earthworms.
  • The borax dries the insects from the inside dehydrating them until they die.

Warnings

  • Wear gloves. Borax will irritate your skin.
  • Do not allow children or pets to eat the borax. If they do, call your local poison center.

  • 1 cup Borax
  • 1/2 cup bacon grease
  • 1 cup sugar
  • Bucket or washable glass bowl (so it won't absorb the ingredients)
