Have you ever gotten surrounded or intimidated by the Covenant Hunters in Halo with not a rocket to spare? Well, here's a simple way to kill them which only takes a little practice.

Steps

  1. First of all, make sure you don't get backed up into a corner. Run to the side and try to get behind the Hunter. If you go up close to it (be careful!) and run around it fast, you should be able to get to its back.
  2. If you manage to do that, one pistol shot at the orange (uncovered) part of the Hunter will kill it (on any difficulty).
  3. If that seems a bit hard, try either sticking them with a grenade and making sure they don't just block it, or throwing a grenade to the side and shooting them while they look at it(note that grenades almost never work as a finishing tactic).
  4. If you think you're godly (which you might be), let them charge, then sidestep and melee them in the back, immediately get out of their way and sidestep again. If you can do this, well... you're good. If you fail, it is your fault. You can practice this in multiplayer by letting people charge you and then sidestep while turning around and meleeing them. If they hit you, you did it wrong. Try again. It's useful in multiplayer as well.
  5. If you want to practice fighting in close quarters with them without relying on melee, try running up to them and immediately backing off. When you come close enough, they will try to melee (Again, don't get hit!). At this moment, they will lift an arm, exposing the belly, which is uncovered like the back. Fire the pistol as many times as possible into the uncovered region to ensure that enough bullets actually strike it.
  6. Or, run at them, and at the last second jump up. they will hit you with their shield, but you won't die. Instead you'll fly into the air, while up there throw a plasma grenade ( the sticky ones) onto the orange part of its body.
  7. As hunters come in pairs, switch to a zoom weapon (Pistol/Sniper Rifle) And get rid of one like that. Then, DO NOT MOVE. The hunter almost never hits you, unless you move. This is because the kickback of his weapon severely damages his accuracy. Then finish him off by throwing a grenade behind him, and let him walk away from it. Then shoot him in the back
  8. Instead of that, you can also kill the first, then charge for the second one. When he charges back at you, walk back and wait for his stomach to be unprotected. Then, empty your assault rifle. Like crazy.
  9. Alternate method of killing hunters: circle around them while meleeing them. This causes them to spin around following you, but not actually meleeing you as you need to be standing still for them to melee you. Note: Not tested on 2 Hunters. MAY be effective on them, though. -300spartans
  10. In order to sneak up to a Hunter, crouch and ever so gently push the joystick toward the hunter and do it in bursts, with this you can easily a attach a Plasma Grenade on their back. After that, just run and come back for seconds.

Tips

  • in halo 1 a single shot from the pistol to an orange spot on the back brought them down easily but not anymore they are much more powerful now.
  • Grenades do NOT work at all; Hunters are the anti grenade whereas a group of jackals might be said to be the reason for frags and elites are the reason for... covenant grenades?
  • It's not always necessary to hit them from the back. There is also an orange spot on their stomach. When they charge and try to melee you, the stomach will be exposed, and you can shoot them in that spot.
  • Usually, you'd want to do this in a wide, open space so you don't get into a tight spot.
  • It's great if you can get an overshield. This means you're better protected from the Hunter's deadly melee charges.
  • Hunters are hard- no lie. Either hit with a rocket, or do what we learned how to do and play tag with them. You can remain literally untouched while two Hunters beat each other to slag around you. Sidestep and know where and how close both are, and simply dodge around their backhands. If they back up and prepare to fire, approach them and they will take another misguided swing.
  • Take them on one at a time, and finish them off fast. Don't let them swarm you.
  • If you use a sniper and shoot the hunter in the back, it will die in 1 shot in halo 1 and 2 but I'm not sure about Halo 3.
  • a good way to kill a hunter is to throw any grenade behind him and then shoot his soft spot.
  • You can also run him over with a vehicle.
  • Get close to them. Hunter melee attacks are easy to avoid. Sidestep the attacking Hunter and fire into its back, a pistol is best for this but sniper and rifles work also.
  • Be Patient... If you are using a sniper, take your time and make sure your shots count.
  • If you can, use a rocket launcher or sniper rifle (from a far place) on the uncovered parts of the Hunter. If the Hunter is facing you at range use a sniper to hit the neck.
  • NOTE from 300spartans: as long as the enemy is NOT on a vehicle and/or can't fly (sentinels can), you can run them over with ANY vehicle, not including the grunts (mission) by Ghost and MAYBE banshees. Also, the Hunters CANNOT be killed from getting melee-d from behind (unlike normal enemies(NOT counting sentinels)) (while they aren't seeing you, probably as they are so big.

Warnings

  • DO NOT use a needler on a Hunter, even from the back. They take time to kill at close ranges.
  • Any good Halo Player will tell you that Covenant weapons are almost useless due to them overheating, which wastes time and gives the Hunter time to Kill you. Also, they run out of battery. Use UNSC Weapons if possible.
  • DO NOT just stand in one place. Jump around like a maniac if you have to.
  • Make sure you try this on the Easy setting first.
