Naming mobs (another word for creatures) in Minecraft can be done with a nametag. Nametags can be found in chests throughout the world. To name a creature, you will need a nametag, an anvil, and at least 5 experience levels.

Steps

  1. Find a name tag. These can be found randomly in Nether Fortress chests, jungle temples, desert temples, and dungeons. You can also trade them with villagers.
  2. Choose the creature you want to name, and the name you will give it. You can name any passive or neutral mob (horses, pigs, zombies etc.)
  3. Get 5 experience levels. You can get experience from smelting, breeding, mining certain ores, and killing mobs.
  4. Right-click on an anvil.
  5. Place your name tag in one of the repair spaces.
  6. Enter the name you want to give your creature in the text box.
  7. Drag the name tag to your inventory.
  8. Find your creature.
  9. Hold the name tag.
  10. Right click on the creature to name it. The name should appear floating above your new named mob.

Tips

  • Nametags can be hard to find, but they can appear in any naturally occurring chests. Keep looking!
  • It is possible to change your name tag if you haven't used it on a mob yet.
  • Don't forget to change the text in the text box, unless you want to name your wolf Name Tag.
