Organize a Soccer Tournament

Holding a soccer cup tournament can help build the reputation of your local team or club, recruit new members and just be a whole lot of fun for everyone involved. You'll need to find a place to hold the event, have a basic budget in place and find competitors for the tournament.

Steps

Finding a suitable location

  1. Talk to local venues that can host the tournament. You will need a place to play, and generally, there will be requirements for use of the facility.
    • Check for insurance requirements.
    • Find out when the facility will be availability.
    • See what will be required as far as field preparation, cleaning, and other tasks needed to use the facility.

Budgeting

  1. Prepare an expense plan, to determine if game fees will be needed to cover the cost, or if local civic organizations or businesses will sponsor your event. Make sure you allow for the cost of trophies, costs involved with getting a field, officials, and all other expenses.
    • Check prices for trophies or medallions. Look for local stores that make them and compare prices.
    • Sponsorship will require promoting the sponsors. Have you thought about what the sponsors will get in return for their sponsorship? For example, advertising at the event, in newsletters, on promotional items, etc.

Putting teams together

  1. Call about 16 teams in your area and ask if they want to play. You can look for locally sponsored teams such as churches, civic organisations with soccer, or community athletic clubs that have soccer teams.
    • Call up friends and family who might be interested in playing.
    • Check at schools if there are interested participants.
  2. Consider your neighbourhood or community for teams. You could rally people by creating teams by street names, suburb names or family surnames.
  3. Select colors for the teams. You could use existing team colors or come up with new combinations.

Setting up the tournament

  1. Name your competition. You want to choose a name that will both attract attention and define the event, it might even be tied to a local event like a festival or community day.
  2. Decide the date of the cup. Set the date in advance to allow teams to schedule participation, and to prepare themselves.
  3. Locate referees and officials to work the games. You may be fortunate to find volunteers, but this isn't always the case.
  4. Hold the tournament. Keep note of the winning teams an award trophies and ribbons for best players, etc. Then, aware the cup to the champs!
