Olive oil can help keep skin smooth and moisturized when it is applied to the body. It is a good way of moisturizing skin naturally without chemicals that are found in many manufactured moisturizers. You can use olive oil straight out of the bottle as a moisturizer by rubbing a small amount into your skin. Olive oil also contains vitamins and antioxidants that help to repair and rejuvenate skin that is exposed to daily elements that may damage it. Moisture is retained in the skin by olive oil, which acts as a barrier to elements that may dry out the skin. As a result, olive oil is best applied to skin that is lightly damp. Although olive oil can be used on its own to moisturize skin, it is best used when it is combined with water and an emulsifier to create a more substantial cream. Here are a few steps on how to make an olive oil moisturizer

Steps

  1. Purchase emulsifying wax from a retailer that specializes in supplies for making homemade cosmetics. There are many dealers that can be found online who sell emulsifying wax.
  2. Buy some essential oils that you would like to use in your moisturizer to provide aromatics. Essential oils can be purchased at various retailers online as well as in most health food stores.
  3. Combine 1/4 cup (56.7 g) of emulsifying wax with 1/4 cup (56.7 ml) of olive oil in a glass liquid measuring cup.
  4. Heat the emulsifying wax and olive oil mixture in a microwave for 1 minute, or until it reaches 155 degrees Fahrenheit (68 C).
  5. Place 1 1/4 cup (282 ml) of water into the microwave and heat for 1 minute, or until it reaches a temperature of about 120 degrees Fahrenheit (48.8 C).
  6. Choose the essential oils that you would like to add to your lotion, and then add 24 to 36 drops to the emulsifying wax and olive oil mixture.
    • Essential oils are aromatic oils made from plants that are added to moisturizers and cosmetics to provide a pleasing scent. You may choose any scent that pleases you for use in the olive oil moisturizer.
  7. Remove the hot water from the microwave and add it to the emulsifying wax and olive oil mixture. The mixture should begin to turn white.
  8. Pour the lotion while it is still hot into the pint-sized (0.47 l) jars where it will be stored.
  9. Allow the lotion to cool overnight before use; otherwise the ingredients may begin to separate.

Tips

  • Experiment with various essential oils to find a scented lotion that you like. Some suggestions for use are geranium oil, Myrrh oil, and lavender oil. Geranium oil is useful for soothing dry and aged skin, and Myrrh oil is useful for adding moisture to skin.
  • You may use any type of olive oil to make the moisturizer that you would like, however, lighter olive oils are recommended because their scent is not as strong. It is recommended that you use extra virgin olive oil for the best results.
  • If you prefer that your moisturizer has no scent, simply omit any essential oils and continue the process.
  • Depending upon the grade and cost of your olive oil, each 1-pint (0.47 l) batch of moisturizer costs about $1 to make.
