Did you just check your drawer and find out either your bra doesn't fit, or you need your first bra? Your mom or friend can't take you, and the only one available is your dad. Here's a few ways to make that awkward trip to the mall a little less awkward.

Steps

  1. Remember that a bra is really not a big deal. Really. Most women wear them, and most dads know that (though some are surprised to find out their little girls are growing up). There's no reason to be embarrassed, ashamed, or bothered by having to shop with your dad, any more than you would be shopping for socks. If you're still embarrassed, though, keep reading.
  2. Go for something else instead, or as well. You needed some new socks anyway, right? Those will get you into the right vicinity, and they'll give you an easy, non-embarrassing reason to go that way.
  3. Do something else during the trip. Don't just sit there in the car with the dreaded, awkward silence. Turn on the radio to a station that you and your dad both like and listen to. Start up a conversation about a common interest. Talk about something else instead of sitting there dreading the trip.
  4. Ask your dad if you can have the money and go in yourself to buy what you need. This is the easiest way to go about your business. Suggest that he goes to a store or different department that he likes while you shop. Many dads will agree because they have no desire to wander around in the underwear section with their teenage daughters, anyway.
  5. Accept that it will be awkward, and go in and get it over with.
  6. Choose something plain. Instead of going to the bras with frilly lace and pink and black sexy details, go for that plain white t-shirt or sports bra. They are usually more comfortable, cost less, and they are usually placed towards the front of stores that sell lingerie. It's much less awkward to buy a simple bra with a nice price in front of your dad than the sexy thong and padded push-up set. You'd buy a t-shirt in front of him, and this is practically a t-shirt, anyway.
  7. Keep your purchases in a bag, in the back seat or trunk on the way home. The awkward part is now behind you, so relax.

Tips

  • Keep a businesslike, no-nonsense attitude. It's just fabric sewn together into the shape of a chest. Big deal.
  • Target is a great place. You can shop for what you need while your dad looks at the TVs or grills.
  • You don't need to go to Victoria's Secret to buy lingerie. Most department and large discount stores that carry clothing have an "intimates" or underwear section that will serve you perfectly well.
  • Know your bra size before you go in to save some time. Do try bras on in the fitting rooms before you purchase them, so you don't have to take them back afterward.
  • Ask store staff for help, especially if you're getting your first bra. They can help you choose a bra, find your size, and so on.
  • Consider that a bra may not be needed. It's a matter of personal preference and there are plenty of healthy choices that serve just as well, such as a camisole, chemise or vest (tank) top, which are available with or without cups.
  • Think about getting clothing articles with built in bras.
  • If you know what you want and what your bra size is, think about ordering a bra online to avoid embarrassment.
  • Remember that the more awkward you make it, the more awkward will it be. Try to have a relaxed attitude!
  • Remind your dad that every girl needs one in their life. It's natural, and there's nothing to be embarrassed about whilst doing it.
  • Act natural. If you stay calm, he will too. Don't be embarrassed. You're growing up.

Warnings

  • Don't get too hung up about it. If you need a bra, you need a bra. There's nothing wrong with that.
