The Galaxy S is a touchscreen phone that went on the market in 2010. [1]Samsung’s Galaxy S differs from later versions of this popular smartphone, such as the Galaxy S II and Galaxy S III, because it runs an earlier version of Android OS. Although basic functions may differ, you can complete screen capture on a Galaxy S by using the basic menu buttons.

Steps

Checking Your Operating System

  1. Turn on your Galaxy S phone.
  2. Touch the Menu button. This is the center square button at the bottom of your phone.
  3. Choose the Setting application. Select “About Phone” in that menu.
  4. Check for the operating system on your phone. If you are running Android v2.2 “Froyo,” you will need to upgrade to v2.3 “Gingerbread.” The Gingerbread update was the first time the Galaxy S had a native screen capture setting.
    • If you have already upgraded to Gingerbread, you can skip to the next part.
    • This download requires a PC running Windows OS to enable the update.
  5. Download the new operating system using the Samsung software program called “Kies Mini. This PC download is available through the Samsung site.
    • Make sure that your phone is fully charged and backed up before starting.
    • Complete the download and installation process for the Kies Mini program on your computer first.
    • Open the Kies Mini program. Connect your PC to your Galaxy S using a USB cable.
    • Select Kies (Firmware update) from the list of options.
    • Choose the “Phone Upgrade” option. Confirm you want to upgrade to start the download process. Your phone will reboot when it is ready.
    • Eject the device and disconnect your phone to use the Galaxy S with Gingerbread. [2]

Taking a Screen Shot

  1. Find the screen that you want to capture. A screen capture or screen shot is a photo of the entire phone screen. It is often used to show people maps, texts and other real-time information.
  2. Press and hold the Back button on the bottom right of your phone.
  3. Press the Home button simultaneously. You need only press it once, rather than holding it down.
  4. Listen for a shutter sound indicating there was a screen capture. The outside border of the screen will also flash when the photo is taken.
  5. Access your screen shot in the Gallery app. It will be saved in a screen shot folder alongside other types of photos. You can text or email the photo by sharing it from this folder. [3]
