Effect: the magician asks a volunteer to pick a card from the deck, look at it then put it back in. Then the magician shuffles the deck whilst explaining that he is going to pull out a random card that feels right then put it in his pocket. He will do this and show the volunteer its not their card then put it in his pocket. Then he will give the deck to the volunteer to see if the card is about in the middle because it can't be too close to the edge for the trick to work. The volunteer will then realize his card is not in there and the magician will magically pull it out his pocket!

Steps

  1. Shuffle the deck and fan it out face up in front of the audience and get someone to pick a card.
  2. Remember the card they picked and ask them to put it back in the deck and shuffle.
  3. Tell them you are going to pick out a card that feels magic and look for the card before their card.
  4. Pick up the card before and their card. put them together (one on top of the other and only show them the card that is not their card. Put them both in your pocket Make sure you put it in your pocket with the picture side of the card facing your leg.
  5. Ask the volunteer to look through the deck and check that their card is near the middle because it can't be too close to the edge for the trick to work to lead them believe that the trick is something else.
  6. When they say their card isn't there, say "That's strange. Wait, this isn't your card in my pocket is it?" then pull out the card closest to your leg (This shouldn't be their card) and say, "No check again just to make sure". Then as they start checking put the card back in your pocket but instead of it being where it was before (in between the card and your leg) put it between there card and the outside of your pants.
  7. After they've checked for the second time say some magic words (or whatever you want to do to add tension), then take both the cards out (One on top of the other again) and only show them their card.
  8. Put both their cards on the deck and make sure to casually shuffle so they don't get suspicious if they see their card and the card you put in your pocket together.

Tips

  • Practice the double lift (where you pick up two cards a once and make it look like one). The better this looks the better the trick looks.

Warnings

  • Wait until you are very good at the trick before you show people, because if you aren't and you mess up, they will know and your trick will be ruined.

Things You'll Need

  • A normal deck of cards
  • A lot of practice
  • A friend/volunteer
