Apple has just released iOS 8, but the update size is throwing a wrench in a lot of people's update plans. If you're trying to update using your device, you may be running into free space issues but don't want to delete all of your songs, videos, and apps just to update. Updating through iTunes allows you to bypass this size restriction.

Steps

  1. Connect your iPhone to your computer. Use the included USB cable.
  2. Open iTunes if it doesn’t start automatically. See Download-iTunes for instructions on downloading iTunes.
  3. Select your iPhone from the Devices menu.
  4. Backup your iPhone. This will help prevent any data loss in case the update doesn’t work properly. Select “Back up to this computer” and click .
    • See Back-Up-Your-iPhone for more details on backing up your iPhone.
  5. Download the iOS 8 update files onto your computer first. Click the or button to look for the update files. Click to confirm. This will download the iOS 8 update files to your computer, bypassing the need to download them to your device.
    • You will still need space on your computer for the update files (between 4-6 GB), but this usually isn’t nearly as much of an issue on a computer as it is on your iPhone.
  6. Wait for the update to install to your iPhone. Once the update files have been downloaded, the update process will begin. This could take a while (20 - 30 minutes), and your iPhone will reset multiple times during the update process.
  7. Start the setup process. Once the update is complete, you will be taken through the phone setup process. Follow the prompts on the screen to finish updating the iPhone.
