The minibike you can do the following modifications on is a mini Baja 6.5 hp from Canadian Tire. Do you own one of these bikes and wish you could keep up to a real dirt bike? With these few minor modifications your minibike can be doing speeds of over {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}}.

Steps

  1. Take off the rear fender, headlight, mock gas tank, and the clutch and chain cover.
  2. Go to your local TSC store or farming supplies store and buy #40 or #41 roller chain.
  3. Remove the two chains’ master links, using a flat screwdriver or needle-nosed pliers.
  4. Remove clutch by taking off the snap ring and loosening off the bolt. Slide the clutch off the engine shaft.
  5. Remove the gear reduction on the motor by removing the bolts that hold it to the block.
  6. Put the clutch back on, only this time with the sprocket facing the motor.
  7. Take the new chain and put it around the two sprockets so the end and the middle of the chain are touching on the back sprocket.
  8. Using a chain breaker or a hammer and nail set, remove the pin from where the chain needs to be cut.
  9. Attach the chain together with the included connecting or master link and tighten the chain.
  10. You can now reattach the clutch cover.
  11. Remove the throttle cable from its stock mounting spot and mount it to the arm under the gas tank or directly to the carburetor. This by-passes the governor, allowing your motor to rev higher and have more power.
  12. Unbolt the muffler baffle, unbolt the stock muffler and cut off the mounting flange with about an inch of tube left on it.
  13. Get a piece of pipe the same dimensions as what is left on the exhaust mounting flange. Cut the pipe so it is at the right angle that it will clear the motor components and the frame etc.
  14. Weld a piece of pipe that has the same wall thickness and fits over the other pipe with about 4 mm extra clearance.
  15. Center it on the pipe and weld it onto the pipe.
  16. Using a half inch round file smooth the inside of the pipes where they join together.
  17. Grind the end of the larger pipe off on an angle for appearance.
  18. Bolt the exhaust back on.
  19. Take off the stock air filter by removing the top wing nut and unscrew the air filter housing.
  20. Replace the air filter with a K & N style air filter or similar.

Tips

  • Always use new lock washers, connecting links, snap rings. Lock tight every bolt or nut you replace to prevent future problems or parts from falling off.
  • In the end you are left with one chain instead of two, and you put the clutch on backwards so that the chain lines up with the sprocket.
  • For the exhaust, the ratio of thinner pipe to the thicker pipe should be about 6:3 for the best appearance and should be around {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} long.
  • You may want to purchase a new Comet Centrifugal Clutch for $40.00 because they are an upgrade from the stock clutch and are more heavy duty.

Warnings

  • Wear protective gear.
  • Always wear a helmet.
  • Always check that every bolt is on tightly and replace with a new ones if possible because the bolts, washers and lock washers on this bike are not the best quality available.
  • Don’t go any faster than you can handle.
  • Don’t drive on public roads where it is not permitted.
