Cake is one type of food that can be crafted and eaten in the game of Minecraft. It appears as a solid block (the only edible block so far in the game), consisting of a sponge base topped by icing and cherries.

Steps

Sourcing the materials

  1. Get three buckets of milk. To get milk, right click on a cow while your character is holding a bucket.
  2. Get one chicken egg. These are laid by chickens, which can be found in the wilderness. You can also keep chickens if you capture them inside a fence.
  3. Get two sugar. Sugar is made from sugarcane and can only be eaten when used as an ingredient in a recipe.
  4. Get three wheat. This acts as "flour" for the cake. Wheat can be farmed or it can be found in dungeon chests.

Crafting the cake

  1. Place the ingredients into the crafting grid. The following pattern is required:
    • Place three buckets of milk across the top three slots.
    • Place one sugar to the left of the center slot, and one to the right.
    • Place the egg in the center slot.
    • Place the wheat in the remaining three bottom slots of the grid.
  2. Craft your cake. To remove to the inventory, shift click or drag. Three empty milk buckets will also be returned to your inventory automatically.

Eating the cake

Each cake block contains six slices.

  1. Place the cake block down on another block. You cannot eat cake by holding the block. You cannot place a cake where you're not able to build.
  2. Right click on the cake to eat a slice.
  3. Share your cake. It is possible to share slices of cake with other players if you want to because there are six slices in each cake block.

Tips

  • After crafting your first cake, you will gain the achievement "The Lie".
  • Cakes are really for fun more than being a reliable food source. They're ingredient intensive, they do not stack (and so take up a lot of inventory space if more than one is kept) and they only provide a low level of saturation. They're probably best kept for a celebration or for a sharing activity during the game. And it does have the advantage of restoring six units of the hunger bar.
  • It takes time to gather the ingredients to make a cake. It's not something a new player will be able to rush into doing.
  • It's also helpful to put a cake or two into all your shelters, houses, etc.

Warnings

  • If you destroy a cake, you lose the cake and gain nothing, as nothing is dropped.
  • Partly eaten cake does not return to your inventory. To finish it, you'll have to come back to where you left it to keep eating it.

Easter eggs

  • By naming a cake "Explosions" in an anvil, the cake will explode upon any player/entity taking a bite. This is a reference to the popular 1985 movie "Prank Calls"
