Ever had to put your hair up but then getting that sinking feeling of- I don't have a hair tie with me? Instead of scrambling for a rubber band that will pull out strands, grab a pencil and keep it up in an improvised messy bun.

Steps

  1. Pull your hair back about halfway up the back of your head as if about to make a ponytail.
  2. Hold the ponytail from the base of it and use your other hand to bring it into a ball and hold it.
  3. Stick a pen, pencil, or like object through the bottom so that it sticks out of the top.
  4. Still holding the bun with one hand, take the pen and make a 360 degree turn until it completes one circle around the bun.
  5. Using the pen, lift up a small strand of hair up from the top of your head just enough for it to go through.
  6. Pull the pen or pencil gently, tucking it under the strand so it's secure.
  7. Release. If it seems to be staying, shake your head three times. If it wiggles, try again.
  8. Finished.

Warnings

  • Be very careful when you're tucking the tip of the pen/pencil in on the top of your head so you don't dig it in. Go gently so you don't stab yourself accidentally.
  • When twisting the pen, go slowly so you don't yank too hard at your hair.

Things You'll Need

  • Pen, pencil, smooth twig, decorative chopstick or similar object
  • Hair
