Make a sea creature mobile for a sea theme at home or in the classroom. This is a cheap and cheerful way to keep amused and indulge in an afternoon of traditional cutting and pasting fun.

Steps

  1. Turn a bowl upside down. This will be your sea creature's body.
  2. Cut a piece of elastic cord about {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} long.
  3. Pierce a hole for the cord in the centre of the bottom of the bowl with some scissors.
  4. Thread the cord through the hole and tie a knot in the bottom so that it won't fit back through the hole. Tie a loop at the other end so that you can hang up your mobile when it is finished.
  5. Cut one long, wavy strip of material. Make sure it is long enough to go around the outside of the bowl and cut a little extra to spare.
  6. Add PVA glue to the inside of the bowl.
  7. Stick the fabric onto the glue so that it hangs down off the edge of the bowl and looks a bit like a Make Paper Plate Jellyfish. Cut off any spare ends of material.
  8. Make the sea creature's legs. Take a few pieces of different coloured felt and lay them one on top of the other. Carefully cut them into strips.
  9. Put some glue on the underside of your bowl and stick the ends of the felt strips down. Work your way round the bowl once, add more glue and repeat until all the strips are glued. These will dangle from your sea creature like tentacles when you hang it up.
  10. Add the final touches. Decorate the body of your creature. Use shiny stickers, glue on bits of shiny paper, stick on a couple of goggle eyes and finish with some glitter glue.
  11. Hang it up after waiting a few minutes until the glue has dried. Enjoy your sea creature but be careful it doesn't bite you!

Tips

  • If you hang up a piece of string from one side of the room to the other, you can hang your sea creature from it, along with strands of green, brown and yellow paper/cellophane dangling down as seaweed. Be imaginative and add other sea creatures you have coloured in, cut out and added decorations to.
