A Twistie is a hairstyle, also known as "two-strand twist" or a "double-strand twist". The technique is similar to braiding except twisting the hair is used. A popular hairstyle for both women and men the twistie is great for thick, frizzy and coarse hair, but works on any hair.

Steps

General Method

  1. Take a shower and use conditioner.
  2. Towel dry your hair.
  3. Optionally, put a small amount of your favorite gel product in your hair. Massage the product into your hair thoroughly.
  4. Use a comb, or your fingers, and separate out two strands of hair, just like a braid except two, not three, strands.
  5. Using your fingers or comb grab the strands and twist them around your fingers. Twist tightly until they become little buns.
  6. Leave about a 1/4" at the end of each twist and twirl into a tight point. This helps secure the end.
  7. Optionally, secure the ends with rubber bands or hair pins.
  8. Let your hair dry completely and naturally.
  9. Do not comb out at the end, instead brush your fingers through your hair.
  10. Your twistie should last until you next wash your hair.

Twist Out Variation

  1. Make a twist-out the the same way you make a twistie, only you let the twists naturally unravel and fall, rather than securing them. The twist-out produces a loose wave.
  2. De-tangle and smooth down you hair as your twist if you intend to create a twist-out.

Tips

  • The size of your twist creates different results. Smaller twists produce tighter waves and last longer, while larger twists produce loose wavy hair.
  • If you have long and thick hair this can take a long time; divide your hair into four pony tails and work with them one at a time.
  • Practice on a doll's hair to get it right before doing your own hair.
  • You will sometimes see hair decorations known as Twisties. These are pieces of jewelry you can twist into your hair, but otherwise have little to do with the hairstyle of the same name.
  • If you have frizzy hair apply some baby oil to your hair after the first wash.

Warnings

  • Make sure you twist in the same direction for each twist.
  • Make sure your hair doesn't split.
  • To avoid puffy hair make your twisties straight down the side of your head, and start as close to your scalp as possible.
