Most mainstream songs are catchy, bass filled, and club smashers. If you are into underground rap and hip hop, here are a few ways to create your own underground rap songs to get up there with the all-time greats.

Steps

  1. Listen to underground rappers and their flow. Study their bar structure and create your own.
  2. Find a beat that suits your style. It's suggested to omit Southern crunk out of the rap genre, as it has a corny style to it and won't really match well.
  3. Get a composition notebook. These types of notebooks hold pages well and last longer than regular style notebooks.
  4. Get computer recording software such as Audacity. A mic dynamic mics are good if you have a preamp and mixer to go with it. You can also get a USB condenser mic, such as an Audio Technica At2020 USB condenser; this is a budget conscious choice.
  5. Record your first song over the beat you chose with the rhymes you wrote or freestyle. Over dubbing is important if you want words to stick out. This is done by making 3 or 2 voice overs, over your original recording and panning out each track making it sound full. Be careful with distorting.
  6. Record more songs and put on a CD. Distribute your CDs while promoting and get support from friends.
  7. Find a rap name for yourself. Be original and get more respect. The more generic names start out with "Lil'", "Killa", and "Big".

Tips

  • Make sure you're getting profit of your CDs.
  • Rap about influential topics instead of general ones.
  • Be confident in your flow. You want your song to make sense, not say something and say something else that doesn't fit into everything.
  • To have a successful CD mix, get a good mic and a quiet area for recording.
  • Don't mess with The Bob or something like that.
  • Hooks aren't really that needed in underground tracks unless you're trying to get famous, otherwise just lay-down bars.

Warnings

  • Don't be cocky.
  • Keep it legal.
  • Rent a studio weekly rather than recording in a noisy house.

  • A composition notebook
  • Some rhymes (that are yours of course)
  • Mic condensers are used to record keep that in mind
  • A place to record
  • A friend to help with this if needed
