Oh no! You were happily typing away on your Mac when everything froze! This article will explain how to restart your Mac so you can get back to what you were doing.

Steps

  1. Find the power button. On an iMac it is found on the back of the computer near the left bottom corner. For a MacBook Pro, it is on the right speaker. On a MacBook, the power button is at the top right corner of the base, near the screen. If you're using a Mac Mini, it is on the back, near the top right corner. Last but not least, the power button for a Mac Pro is on the front.
  2. Press and hold this button for 5 seconds, and the computer will shut down.
  3. Restart your Mac by pressing the power button again and releasing it quickly. If it doesn't restart, try again after a brief wait.
  4. If it is still not restarting, check your power supply. If the power supply is okay, your hard drive may have become corrupted during the force restart. Try booting into the recovery partition by holding down the Command (⌘) and R keys immediately after hearing the initial startup chime. Once you are booted into the recovery partition, a utilities window will appear with several options. Choose "Disk Utility". Select your hard drive in the sidebar and click on the "Repair Disk" button. It may take some time for your computer to run the scan and attempt to fix any problems; once it's completed click on the apple in the menu bar and shut down your computer. Restart the machine normally. If you Mac still fails to boot properly, take it to the nearest certified Apple repair store.
