Prepare Rasam in Tamil Nadu Style

Rasam soup plays an important role in south Indian feasts. A wide variety of rasam soups are available in the southern states of India. It is said to improve digestion, due to all of its main ingredients having good medicinal properties.

Ingredients

  • Medium gooseberry sized Tamarind
  • 1 medium size Tomato
  • 1 tbsp pepper
  • 1 tbsp cumin
  • 3 medium sized red chili
  • 4 garlic pieces
  • Pinch of turmeric powder
  • 2 tsp oil
  • 1 tsp mustard
  • 1 stem of curry leaves
  • 3 stem of coriander leaves
  • Salt to taste

Steps

  1. Soak tamarind in one and half cups of water in a small bowl and add a pinch of turmeric powder and a little salt.
  2. Squeeze and filter the tamarind juice and keep to one side.
  3. Smash the tomato add to the tamarind juice.
  4. Grind the pepper, cumin, garlic and one red chili, so that it gives a dry powder.
  5. In a pan, add oil and heat, then add the mustard and once it cracks add 2 chillies, then the curry leaves.
  6. Add prepared tamarind juice.
  7. Add the ground powder and salt to taste.
  8. Slowly bring the mixture to a boil.
  9. It is very important to turn off the stove as soon as it begins to froth, because further boiling gives a bitter taste.
  10. Garnish with coriander leaves.
  11. Enjoy the delicious rasam.
