If you are going away for a bit and don't know how much to take (or what to take) this article will explain the essentials you should have.

Steps

  1. For clothing, make sure you know exactly how many days you will be away. If its for 5 days, pack for six just in case. Always have a "just-in-case" outfit.
  2. Make a list of everything you use in a day. Pack for the amount of days you will be staying plus one. Remember swimsuits (if it applies), pajamas, and jackets (if it applies).
  3. Start with your location: Will you be at a friend or family member's home where you can use their items sometimes? Or will you be at a hotel where not everything is provided? Doing laundry can be time consuming and expensive and usually, only upscale hotels offer a Laundry Service. This service may be great, but it's expensive!
  4. Start with your head: Shampoo and conditioner, gel, spray, your own brush or comb (you never want to be stuck with lice), etc.
  5. Pack for your face. Do you use creams or cleansers that you will need? Bring a toothbrush and sample sized tube of paste. If you don't have a toothbrush holder use a baggy. Pack nothing over 100ml in your hand luggage - decant all larger toiletries into 100ml bottles, or the security at the airport will take them.
  6. Pack clothes. Pack clothes that all coordinate with each other. Don't forget under clothes and pajamas! (You may want to have some extra underclothes, so pack for as many days that you are staying plus at least two - it never hurts to be safe.) A good thing to do is pack four pairs of shorts/skirts and 9 tee-shirts or vest tops and matching flip-flops. Also, remember to pack those all too important bathing suits if this guest has a pool. Remember to pack beach towels, sunscreen, and other pool things.
    • Shoes: Try to pack so that you have outfits that match the shoes you wear to the location, and if not try to only pack one other pair, it really saves space. Is there a pool or beach? You probably only need to pack one pair of flip-flops.
  7. Include other things like medications – you'll need proof that these are yours if you are going to an airport, so take a prescription form or something with you.. Make sure you have enough to last the trip plus a day or two.
  8. Pack electronic gear. Remember your cell phone and its charger. This is especially important if you are very far from home--you don't want to be out of touch. Same with your laptop if you're bringing it. Remember its connections and its cord that goes to the wall for charging. As well with an iPod or mp3 player--make sure you have the USB cord and charger for it.
  9. Remember things that will entertain you. These include magazines, music and books.
  10. Don't forget your underwear, spending money, and lots of lollies or treats if you are traveling in a car.
  11. Never forget the things to keep kids amused. It's not fun if you forget the DS, iPods, or even phones. You can also bring books
  12. Being away from home is hard, just remember to enjoy yourself!

Tips

  • Make sure you have your packing list with you because you can repack everything for your trip home.
  • Remember to always pack more than enough but not so your luggage is overloading. Check on what you max weight for suitcases are and keep weighing as you go in case of any inconveniences. A normal hand luggage allowances is 5kg, which is not a lot.
  • Keep this in your head: passports, tickets, money.
  • Make sure you have everything you need for a plane trip.
  • Carry a phrase book for the language where you are going as not everyone speaks your language. Just a pocket size phase book would do.
  • If you are a person who menstruates, don't forget pads, tampons, or menstrual cups.
  • If you are packing and have a child, let him/her help you to minimize the amount of tears for when you are going away.

Warnings

  • Don't forget to bring the most important items in a carry-on bag if you are flying, or even if you are driving.
  • Always know if you are able to stay extra days if there is a problem with your flight/car.
  • If your plane is delayed after you have been taken to the airport, stay calm. Go have a look around, but remember to keep popping backwards and forwards to your departure lounge in case you miss your flight.

Things You'll Need

  • 5 or 6 of pairs of shorts or skirts/trousers.
  • 8 vest tops, tee-shirts, or long sleeve shirts
  • Your laptop, cell phone, electronics etc.
  • Bathing costume, towel, goggles and cap (If you need one)
  • Toiletries (Under 100ml)
  • Don't forget to bring nice clothes for when you are going out to dinner
