Grow a Chilli Plant from a Seed

Chillies are used in most foods for more of a spicy taste. Having it freshly off a plant will be more rich is flavour. All you need is time and chilli seeds.

Steps

Store sourced seeds

  1. Purchase seeds from the local garden center or garden store.
  2. Take a small/medium size pot and fill 1/4 full of soil.
  3. Place the seeds into the pot of soil.
  4. Finish with more soil to top up. Leave {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} from top of the pot.
  5. Place the pot in a suitable spot.
    • If it is winter, put the pot indoors away from the frost.
    • If it is spring or summer, put the pot outside with a glass jar upside down on top of the pot to create a mini greenhouse.
  6. Water the seedlings once a week outside. You can take your plant outside still with a glass jar over it. This will help your plant be protected from predators and still have its natural sunlight. The water will keep it from drying out in the summer.
  7. When the chilli plant starts to sprout, remove the jar. At this stage you can give it compost for your chillies to grow bigger and healthier. Your plant will also grow quicker as well. Only compost once a week.
  8. When your plant starts growing chillies you won't need to compost. All you need to do is to water the plant every week, once a week. It should be fine from then.
  9. When your chillies are red they are ready. There is your chilli plant.

Seeds from a chili pepper

When you cook chili, consider removing the seeds. Don't throw the seeds away. You can use them to grow your own chili plant.

  1. Make sure the chili seeds are dry enough. Expose the seeds in a dry kitchen for 2-3 days. It will be even better if you dry the seeds under warm sunlight, such as on a windowsill.
  2. Fill a pot with humid soil.
  3. Spread the seeds on the soil.
  4. Keep moist. Don't forget to keep the humidity of the soil by watering the soil when it is needed. Expose the pot under the sun.
  5. After a week, you should see a little bud of chili plant growing.
  6. Maintain your plant by watering regularly. Also give it adequate fertilizer/compost.
  7. When a chilli grows and you want to harvest it, pluck the chilli with its stalk. It will help the chilli plant to grow a new flower or branch.

Tips

  • Compost works on all plants. It help the world by reducing landfill. You can make your own compost system as well.
  • When your chilli plant start growing chillies, flowers will start to show.
