Make use of your Skype account for video and voice calls, instant messaging and more even when you’re not at your computer. All you need is the Skype app for iPad and an Internet connection and you’re all set.

Steps

  1. Tap the Skype icon on your iPad’s Home screen to launch the Skype app.
  2. Type your Skype Name and password into the fields that appear and tap the Sign In button.
  3. Your contacts are shown with their profile image if they have set one. Tap the name of a contact.
  4. Tap one of the buttons on the contact view to perform a particular action.

To make a Video Call

  1. Tap the Video Call button.
  2. Wait for the call to connect.
  3. When the call is connected, tap anywhere on the screen. The buttons that appear allow you to select which camera on your iPad you want to use, mute the call or adjust the volume. Tap the red End Call button to hang up.

To make a Voice Call

  1. Tap the Voice Call button.
  2. Wait for the call to connect.
  3. When you are connected, the buttons that appear allow you to switch to a video call with the iPad’s front or rear camera, mute the call, dial a number on the Skype keypad or adjust the volume. Tap the red End Call button to hang up.

To send an Instant Message

  1. Tap the IM button.
  2. The IM interface now appears. Type your message using the software keyboard and tap the Send button.
  3. The message is sent to your contact. Responses to your message will be shown on the same screen.

To send an SMS

  1. Tap the SMS button.
  2. Type your message using the software keyboard.
  3. Tap the Send button to send your message.

Tips

  • Make sure you have a decent connection to the Internet when making video calls or the picture quality may be reduced.
  • To call a regular phone number, tap the Keypad button at the top right of the screen, above your contacts and type the number using the keypad that appears.

Warnings

  • Making calls and sending messages from one Skype account to another is free, but you will be charged for calling regular phone numbers or sending SMS messages from the Skype app.
  • Video calls use a lot of bandwidth, so if you pay for a mobile data plan you might want to make video calls using Wi-Fi rather than your carrier’s cellular network.

Things You’ll Need

  • The Skype for iPad app (available from the App Store)
  • An 3G or Wi-Fi internet connection
  • A Skype account
