Temple Run is a game for iOS and Android that became a sweeping success. Though the concept of the game is really simple, it can be a bit tricky at times. With a few tips and some practice, you can meet and possibly even beat your friends' high scores! Have fun!

Steps

  1. Download Temple Run. Since this game is very popular, you can easily search for it on your App Store or Google Play. It just takes little space in your device so download should not take too long with decent internet speed. Oh, by the way, the game is free!
  2. Launch the game. Launching the game instantly brings you to its intro page. Here you have the option to either access the objectives, stats, options, store, or more games by Imagi. You can also dive directly into the game by tapping the Play button.
  3. Keep running. The moment you tapped the Play button, you have already dared to take the idol (as the intro page indicates). That being said, the goal in Temple Run is to get away with the priceless idol. Throughout the game you will be faced with a series of obstacles like tree roots, fire-breathing gargoyles, and other breaks in the temple’s surface. You will also be chased by "Evil Demon Monkeys". They are always behind you, so trip too many times, and they will catch up to you, which will lead to a game over.
  4. Do the tutorial. At the early part of your escape from the evil monkeys, you will undergo a short tutorial. Take this time to learn the basics of Temple Run. The controls are very simple swipes on the screen and some device tilting.
    • To turn, swipe your finger in a quick, light motion in the direction you wish to go. Turn too slow, and you will run off the edge of the temple.
    • To jump over tree stumps, ropes, fire, or gaps in the temple surface, swipe quickly upward in the same manner. This will give you a short, quick jump
    • To slide under trees, fire, and ropes, slide your finger down in a quick, light manner.
    • Tilt the device to the left or right to move your runner to one side of the screen or the other. This is necessary if you want to collect coins or if the temple surface is cut in half.
  5. Collect coins whenever possible. Coins play an important role in upgrading your skills in order for you to improve your speed and also purchase utilities such as boosts. However, remember to just ignore coins when you have reached a good score and just focus on avoiding the obstacles.
    • On the side of the playing screen is a meter. As you collect coins the meter will fill up. When it is full, you will receive a score bonus!
  6. Acquire store credits. Whenever you finish a game, a portion of your score is added to your "Store Credits". With these credits you can buy upgrades, wallpapers, and utilities. Access the store from the Main Menu or from the Game Over Screen.
    • There are three wallpapers available in Temple Run to collect. Temple (5,000 coins), Guy Dangerous (5,000 coins), and Evil Demon Monkey (5,000 coins).
    • Other characters that are up for unlock are Scarlett Fox (10,000 coins), Barry Bones (10,000 coins), Karma Lee (25,000 coins), Montana Smith (25,000 coins), Francisco Montoya (25,000 coins), and Zach Wonder (25,000 coins).
    • There are three utilities available for purchase: Resurrect immediately after death (500 coins), Boost ahead 1000m at the start of the game (2500 coins), and Mega Boost ahead 2500m at the start of the game (10,000 coins).
  7. Purchase power-ups. This is an easy way to get ahead on your score. Power-ups appear as floating icons above the temple surface. Simply jump to reach them. Though these power-ups are useful, they certainly don’t have lasting effect. That being said, if you particularly like a certain power-up, you can continue upgrading it with more coins to get its full benefit. There are five power-ups in Temple Run.
    • Mega Coin: The icon will automatically give you more coins
    • Coin Magnet: For a limited amount of time, coins will come to you no matter what part of the temple surface you are on.
    • Invisibility: For a limited amount of time, you do not have to jump or slide. Don't forget that you still have to turn though!
    • Boost: When you hit the boost icon, your avatar will run at an increased speed, automatically dodging all obstacles. All you have to do is watch your runner go!
  8. Complete objectives. The game may seem one directional but there are also available objectives that you could complete for some more bonuses. These objectives include collecting certain amount of points (Adventurer), distance (Sprinter), and other statistics.

Tips

  • If the path is cut in half you can jump over to that side. This can give you a little more time to move over.
  • You will run best when you are in a quiet room, just focusing on your screen.
  • When you're playing the game, stay in a place where you can move your device.

Warnings

  • Don't get too wrapped up in Temple Run! Keep in mind that it is a non-ending game, in the end it is all just about points and mileage and no actual story ending.
