You can quickly add a friend to your WhatsApp contacts list as long as the person is in your phone’s address book or contacts list. If your friend is also on WhatsApp, you can immediately chat and call via WhatsApp for free. Otherwise, you can invite your friends to WhatsApp with a quick message.

Steps

Adding Friends

  1. Add the person's phone number to your phone's contact list. The only way to contact someone in WhatsApp is if you have the person's phone number in your device's contact list and they have WhatsApp installed. It is not possible to add someone to your WhatsApp contact list using a name, email address, username, or any other method.[1]
  2. Include country codes for your international friends. If your friend has an international number, make sure you enter the number into your address book with the full international format (+ [Country Code] [Full Phone Number]) Remove any leading 0s from your friend's international number.[2]
    • Mexican numbers must have a 1 after the +52 country code.
    • Argentinian numbers must have a 9 after the +54 country code.
  3. Give WhatsApp access to your contacts. You were prompted to allow access to contacts when WhatsApp was first installed, but if you declined you'll need to enable access in order for WhatsApp to scan your contact list:
    • iPhone - Open the Settings app on your iPhone Home screen. Tap "Privacy" and then "Contacts." Toggle "WhatsApp" on in the list.
    • Android - Open the Settings app on your device (This only applies to Android 6.0+, as older versions did not confirm individual permissions). Tap "Apps" or "Application manager." Find WhatsApp in the Downloaded list. Tap the "Permissions" button and then toggle "Contacts" on.
  4. Ensure that the other person has WhatsApp installed. You won't be able to chat with anyone that does not have WhatsApp installed. If your friends aren't appearing, they either do not have WhatsApp installed or you've entered their number incorrectly in your device's contact list.[3]
  5. Invite your friends to use WhatsApp. If your friends aren't using WhatsApp, you can send invites to them via email or SMS:
    • Tap the "Favorites" (iPhone) or "Contacts" (Android) tab.
    • Scroll to the bottom of the list and tap "Invite friends."
    • Tap the "Invite" button next to the contact you want to send an invite to.
    • Select how you want to send the invite. You can select email and SMS, as well as additional messaging services that may be installed on your phone.

Chatting with Friends

  1. Open the Favorites (iPhone) or Contacts (Android) tab. This will display everyone from your phone's contact list that has WhatsApp installed on their device. These are the only people you can chat with in WhatsApp.
  2. Search for a friend in your contacts list. If you have a lot of contacts in WhatsApp, you can search through them by tapping the Search option at the top of the screen. As you start typing, your list of friends will be filtered.
  3. Tap the friend you want to chat with. If friends are not appearing in your list, make sure that you have entered their phone number correctly into your phone's address book, and that they have WhatsApp installed on their devices.
  4. Tap the "Call" button to call the friend you are chatting with. This will place a call that will not count against your phone plan's minutes. It will use your cellular data or Wi-Fi if you are connected.
