A tinted glass railing dramatically improves your view and can be custom fit to any area. And with the right glass it's as strong and safe as a wood railing.

Steps

  1. After the deck is constructed and the posts bolted in place, cut top and bottom 2 x 4 rails to fit between the posts.
  2. Attach the rails with pre-drilled 3" deck screws. Use spacer blocks to hold the rails in position as you screw them in.
  3. Glue and nail the top and bottom outside plates in place. Rip a 1 x 3 in half to make the plates, or use 1 x 2.
  4. Purchase tempered, tinted glass cut to fit the opening (minus 1 1/2" at each end). 3/8" thickness is best, though 1/4" is acceptable (and much cheaper) for narrow openings. Check with your local building department. The glass will have to be special-ordered.
  5. Wipe the bottom rail clean along the plate. Place 3/8-in. self-adhesive vinyl bumpers on the bottom rail against the plate every 18 in. Drill a 3/8-in. hole on each side of all bumpers, through the bottom rail, so water won’t collect where the glass and bottom rail meet.
  6. Set the glass on top of the bumpers, center it and press it tight against both top and bottom plates.
  7. Place the top plate against the glass under the top rail and nail it carefully, making sure the nail gun and nails don’t touch the glass. Then attach the bottom plate.

Warnings
