Learn the French words for these fruits. Then, next time you go to the market, you can practice your French as you shop.

Steps

  1. Learn the following terms:
    • The grapefruit = le pamplemousse It's pronounced "pom-pleh-mousse" (mousse as in the dessert)
    • The lemon = le citron Say: See-tron. To do a French r, lightly tap the roof of your mouth with your tongue so it sounds like you're doing a short rolling of r's on your tongue.
    • The plum = la prune say: proon. OO as in book, look, and cookie. Not food, mood, etc., The n is barely noticeable.
    • The peach = la pêche Say: pesh.
    • The watermelon = la pastèque (Le melon d'eau in Canada) Say: Meh-lohn. D'eau is pronounced like "doh!" with a D in front.
    • The pineapple = l'ananas (it's like saying na-na-na, except take way the first n)
    • The cantaloupe = le cantaloup
    • The strawberry = la fraise
    • The apple = la pomme
    • The prune = le pruneau
    • The orange = l'orange
    • The raspberry = la framboise
    • The slice of pear = la tranche de poire or when you shop or order food from somewhere.

Tips

  • Another useful word is "jus" (jooh), which means juice. Example: Le jus de pomme (apple juice). Le jus d'orange (orange juice).
  • For help with pronunciation consult the website listed below.
  • Try making different sentences about each fruit. This will help you to learn the names as you carry on simple conversation:
    • J'aime les pommes. (I like apples).
    • Il me faut une pastèque/J'ai besoin d'une pastèque. (I need a watermelon).
    • Il y a quatre framboises. (There are four raspberries).
    • Lavez les raisins, s'il vous plait. (Wash the grapes, please).
    • Je prendrai un abricot. (I will have an apricot).
  • You might also want to learn the -er verb "acheter" (ashetey), meaning "to buy". You can also use the phrase "Je voudrais acheter un/une/des _________" (je voodray ashetey un/oon/dey ______), meaning "I would like to buy a(an)/a(an)[f.]/some _______."
