You can reduce the time that it takes for your Windows 7 PC to boot by editing the programs and services that launch during startup. This does not mean uninstalling any programs, only that you will then have to launch these programs either from the Start Menu or from a shortcut on the desktop.

Steps

  1. Check start-up logs to identify potential system resource hogs. You can do this from Start menu by typing MSCONFIG in the search box, clicking the .exe file, then clicking the Startup tab.
  2. Any programs that you may have installed and allowed to run on Start-up will show in the Start > All Programs > Startup
  3. Find out which programs were installed by you. You can check the date of installation from Start > Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features. Identify the third party applications you wish to remove or those that you do not need. Uncheck these in the Startup Manager.
  4. Disable Startup programs selectively by un-checking the application tick box under Startup.

Tips

  • You can either edit startup programs manually or download free software such as Startup Tool and Registry Mechanic.

Warnings

  • Observe caution with .exe files in the Program Files and Windows/System 32 folders
  • Do no uninstall programs as some free applications may not allow you to reinstall on the same computer twice.
