If you're annoyed with Google Chrome showing up your most-visited websites on every new browser tab that you open, there are a few steps you need to take in order to prevent this. You can either clear specific items from your browsing history, or you can remove the entire browsing history if you don't want to leave any traces on the computer you used.

Steps

Clearing Your Most-Visited Websites

  1. Open your Google Chrome browser.
  2. Open a new browser tab. You can do this by clicking on the "New Tab" button in the upper-left side of the browser, next to the small X of the currently viewed tab.
    • The new browser tab will display thumbnails of your most-visited website at the bottom of your browser window, below the Google search field.
  3. Hover your mouse over the thumbnail you want to remove. This will display a "Close" button in the top-right corner of the thumbnail.
  4. Click the "Close" button. This will remove the thumbnail from your browsing history; it will no longer be displayed on the new tab of the Google Chrome browser.
  5. Repeat this action with every thumbnail you wish to remove from your browsing history.

Clearing Specific Items

  1. Open your Google Chrome browser.
  2. Click “Customize and control Google Chrome. This is at the top-right corner of the browser window.
    • This menu is represented by an icon with three short horizontal lines.
    • A menu will drop down after selecting this.
  3. Select the "History" option. This will display all websites you have visited starting from the current day and going back in chronological order. Scroll down the page to see the entire list of websites that you visited.
    • Click the Older link if you wish to complete the list with older records.
  4. Hover your mouse pointer over any record from this list. A checkbox will show up next to it (at the left).
  5. Select this checkbox next to all records you wish to remove from the browsing history.
  6. Click the "Remove Selected Items" button placed at the top of the browsing history list. This will remove the websites you selected from your browsing history, and they will never show up on a new browser tab in Google Chrome.

Clearing the Entire Browsing History

  1. Open your Google Chrome browser.
  2. Click “Customize and control Google Chrome. This is at the top-right corner of the browser window.
    • This menu is represented by an icon with three short horizontal lines.
  3. Select "Tools" and then "Clear Browsing Data."
  4. Select the Browsing History checkbox. Use the drop-down box at the top of this pop-up to select the amount of data you want to delete.
  5. Select the "Beginning of Time" option to clear the entire browsing history.
  6. Click the "Clear Browsing Data" button.

Tips

  • Whatever method you chose to remove your most visited websites from a visible place (like a new browser tab), make sure you don't remove links that you will need to reference later.
