Free Up Disk Space on a Windows XP PC

Running low on memory? Need to download more movies or PC games but unfortunately you have run out of space? This article will teach you how you can increase your hard drive space without deleting your precious files.

Steps

  1. Run the Microsoft Windows Disk Cleanup Utility

    • Double click on My Computer
    • Right Click the C: or D: Drive and select Properties
    • Under the General Tab, Select Disk Cleanup
  2. Delete Temporary Files

    • Click Start and select Run
    • Type in "temp" (without the quotations) and click Ok
    • You are free to delete the Junk files in this folder
  3. Videos take up LOTS of space, delete any you don't need

    • Click Start and Select Search
    • Click "Pictures, Music or Video"
    • Tick the "Video" Checkbox and Search
    • Wait for the Search to complete, and delete unnecessary videos
  4. Remove any unwanted programs

    • Click Start and select Control Panel
    • Click on Add or Remove Programs
    • Select any Unwanted software and click Remove
  5. Empty the Recycle Bin

    • Open your Desktop (Windows Key + M)
    • Right Click your Recycle Bin and select Empty Recycle Bin

Tips

  • Malware, viruses etc can not only harm your computer, but also take up lots of space. You can rid of them by downloading antivirus virus software e.g Avast, MalwareBytes, AVG. Or you can do a scan without downloading anything by clicking Start, Run, Typing in "CMD" (without the quotations) and running through the scan process.
  • You can free up LOTS of space by deleting system restore points (which can be selected when running the Microsoft Windows Disk Cleanup Utility)
  • You can Also Free up Space by downloading CCleaner, Glary Utilities, Iobit Advanced System Care, Tuneup Utilities, Registry Easy or System Mechanic and running their Cleanup features
  • Defragmenting your hard drive is good thing to do to. You can download a Quality Defragmenter like Defraggler or Analog Disk Defragmenter or you can use the Windows one. To access it, Click Start, All programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk Defragmenter. You can also Click Start, My Computer, Right Click Disk C:, Select Properties, Select the "Tools" tab, Click Defragment now

  • Never delete files from the WINDOWS or system32 folder. This can cause undesired results
